The Seychellois are a blend of different nationalities, all of whom have brought their own customs and cultures to the islands. The result is a country steeped in folklore and legends from many continents. From France came Roman Catholicism and of course the language, from Britain a variety of ghost stories and Scottish dancing, from Africa and Madagascar the mysterious 'Gris Gris' magic and the first slaves brought to the islands the music and dance of the Moutia and Sega. 

It cannot be said that the Seychellois are a fast-living race. From the earliest settlement, the people who have lived on these islands have been characterised by their happy-go-lucky nature. One story is told of a visitor to Seychelles who, remarking on the large quantities of seaweed washed up on the beach, said to a fisherman standing by, "Do you make good use of this seaweed"? To which the fisherman replied, "Of course not - why should we? God didn't give seaweed legs".
