Finland is a Nordic country situated between the West and the East. Finland's history reflects this position.
Finland was part of the Swedish Crown for 600 years, before becoming a Russian Gran Duchy for about a century. An independent republic Finland is since 1917. Today Finland is clearly one of the Scandinavian countries. The Scandinavian values and the institutions of a welfare state mark the Finnish way of life.
Eastern reflections are to be seen, for example, in some of the traditions, in gastronomy, in music, and maybe also in the character of Finns.
