The population of Finland, the 7th largest country in Europe, is merely 5 171 000, and the population density is 17 inhabitants per square kilometre (40 per sq.mile). In towns or urban areas live 65% of Finns and 35% in rural areas.

Finnish, a Finno-Ugrian language, is spoken by 93% of the Finns, and about 6% of the population are Swedish-speaking. The great majority of the Finns are Lutherans (85.6%) by religion, and 1.1% are Orthodox.
