In many ways Canada is a very new country, and you almost get a sense of its cities having being carved out of the wilderness. In Québec City, though, there is a strong old-European vibe. Not only is it Canada's oldest city (dating back to the early seventeenth century), and the sole walled city to be found in North America; it is also the capital of French speaking Québec, and unfailingly French in character, from the Gallic appearance of the architecture to the cafés serving coffee and croissants.
The Old City around the harbour has been designated a historical monument and is listed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. Easily explored by foot, there are no shortage of quaint shops, outdoor cafés and restaurants. If you're feeling decadent, book a table at Á la Table de Serge Brugere, considered to be one of the best restaurants in Canada.
