The waters around Canada's shores offer some of the best whale-watching opportunities in the world. Both the east and west coasts are major migration routes, as the water is so rich in food and the shorelines so full of sheltered bays for whales to rest and feed. Blue, finback, humpback and beluga whales can be seen off the Atlantic coast near New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and Newfoundland, while California grey whales and orcas ('killer' whales) can be seen off the Pacific coast, especially around Vancouver island. March to April and September to October are the best times to see grey whales as they migrate to and from their breeding ground in the waters around Baja California.
