Geography
Honduras, in the north-central part of Central America, has a Caribbean as well as a Pacific coastline. Guatemala is to the west, El Salvador to the south, and Nicaragua to the east. The second-largest country in Central America, Honduras is slightly larger than Tennessee. Generally mountainous, the country is marked by fertile plateaus, river valleys, and narrow coastal plains.
Climate
The coastal lowlands have a hot tropical climate all year round with temperatures approaching 30oC. The mountainous interior has a milder climate and in December and January temperatures hover around 18oC and it is cool at night. The rainy season runs from May to November with afternoon showers – although precipitation is more persistent on the north coast. September through to November is the hurricane season when rainfall may be heavy.
Highlights
The Bay Islands
The three Bay Islands are located a mere 60km off the north coast and they are one of the country’s biggest tourist attractions. The clear and calm waters around the coral reef teem with marine life. The islands offer excellent snorkelling and diving, and are renowned for being one of the cheapest places in the world to obtain PADI certification. Of the three islands, Roatán has the best tourist infrastructure - the white sands, tropical sunsets and laid-back Caribbean way of life provide all the ingredients for pure relaxation
