MIAMI is a sparkler of a city. Originally settled by the Tequesta Indians at the mouth of the Miami River, the downtown area hugs the junction of the river and Biscayne Bay, looking out to the Atlantic Ocean. Built almost from scratch in the 1920s and '30s, Miami has grown and diversified: The influx of Cubans in the 1950s and then Haitians, Israelis, Europeans, Asians and other Latin Americans in the 1980s and '90s has transformed Miami into one of the most cosmopolitan and multicultural cities in the world.
Business Attire/Practices
Expect a mix of clothing styles, partly because of the weather, partly because of a prevailing casual atmosphere. It ranges from power suits in the immediate downtown area to stylish yet casual dress in all other parts of town. Clothing that would be somewhat showy in a business setting in New York or Washington is more kindly regarded in Miami. The Latin guayabera , a combination shirt/jacket with four pockets, is very popular with men, especially in summer.
Winter visitors should be prepared for cold snaps with near-freezing temperatures. All year long, the intense ultraviolet rays of the sun demand the use of a sun screen or sunblock and protective clothing. Take precautions even on cloudy days.
